Excellent idea, Stuart. I know Mr. Milford was retired from the NM AML program by July, 2005, but will try to find his current contact info. Anyone out there in cyberspace have a lead on Mr. Milford?

I wonder if it would be possible to set up an interview or discussion with Mr. Milford and possibly arrange to have him speak at a Mojave Underground conference such as the proposed Historic Underground Mining Preservation Regional. The message of the document above suggest he may be a very valuable and insightful ally in our cause.

As a former employee of the government I truly understand the ideology of pleasing not those whom we are supposed to serve, but instead striving to please the ones who provide all the funding. I am a very excited to follow the progress of Adopt A Mine, keep writing these fantastic articles!

I agree Raymond, and I think the BLM request for site stewards anticipates attracting volunteers who aren't as interested in mineral rights but are interested in adopting areas in the loosest sense of the word...like a neighborhood watch kind of system...if one files necessary paperwork; and actually files a claim, of course they would have rights to minerals and access...some of these mines in need of adoption may actually be on state land and or in areas reserved as wilderness study areas and would not be subject to claiming. We encourage claiming any property open to location and stand ready to advise/assist anyone who chooses to do so.

I think if a person searches/finds a site, and decides to become a steward or files necesary paperwork to reclaim it ,then he should keep mineral rights or access to site as property .

Silver City project estimates: Equipment and manual closure of 221 hard rock mine openings and revegetation of disturbed areas.
May [But MAY NOT] include construction of gates, grates, block or rock wall closures. UT DOGM AMRP doesn't like to preannounce how many will be backfilled... Project set to go to bid Late Summer 2009

Here is the problem, Sec 36 covers most of the townsite and mines within Silver City, and Sec 36 is owned by the State of Utah, who generally believes what a fellow agency says when they certify these as public safety hazards.

Unless a lot of people suddenly what to lease these claims from the State, they will be backfilled...

Here is the latest updated and detailed map of the project area:

Spectrum Engineering is the contractor making the inventory and tagging which mines should be closed...

Greetings and Welcome to George and Chris. We welcome the dialogue and will schedule a telecon as soon as practical...In the meantime, please review some additional documents and comments posted above. George, the AML data on GeoCommunicator is a great step forward in transparency and in the disseminating of public-financed data on AML. I can remember years ago pre LR-2000, it was impossibly expensive to obtain mine claim information from the US Govt. Times have changed. Thanks for visiting and to jumpstart the discussion, I will admit I painted the FAST program with a pretty broad brush due to our firsthand experiences here in UT. Other states may indeed be taking a more reasoned and reasonable approach to closing truly dangerous shafts. UT's receipt of coal royalty tax dollars, which NV does not recieve, may have spoiled our agencies into wanting to pour those dollars into backfilling.
