After you submit a potential mine for adoption, we will log in the data and open a digital file on the mine, its district, other mines in the same area, and begin to compile the written and documented history of the area. Photos will be solicited, as well as maps, letters, journal and newspaper entries, etc. If warranted, a team will be sent to conduct further on-site recording via digital camera, video, and precise GPS coordinates obtained. Our team will utilize some of the most cutting edge technologies [HD Video, Panoramic photography, VR, Photosynth, etc.] in recording and preserving the entire landscape of the area.
If we conclude that an underground survey would be warranted and safe to conduct, we follow the NAMHO guidelines for the recording of the underground archaeology of mines.
We will add your submission to our growing database of mines and
1. determine if it is currently in danger of reclamation or
2. if it is need of immediate protection and monitoring.
If it IS in need of action to prevent reclamation we will immediately prioritize the mine for Sec 106 compliance and assess its significance, integrity and potential for inclusion in the NRHP [National Register of Historic Places]
NR nomination is not the end of the process. In fact, NR status does NOT guarantee a cultural site’s preservation or protection–it only makes it harder for a state agency to proceed with reclamation without first “mitigating” any “adverse” effect. This translates to a mere slowing down of the process. With your help, significant mining sites will never be “mitigated” and will never suffer the “adverse” effects of reclamation.
Your submission puts you in first place for being offerred the opportunity to formally adopt the mine.
Formal adoption includes:
1. Being registered in our database as the adoptor.
2. Issuance of an Adoption Certificate.
3. Instructions on how to record and document your adopted mine.
4. Webspace if you wish to post photos and/or the history of the mine [subject to editing by AAM admins if it is determined that location information would be compromised or give agencies a headsup on backfilling]
